John Prescott Hughes
8/24/1923 - 2/4/2010




John Prescott Hughes, 86, of Port Orange passed away Thursday, February 4, 2010.  He was born in Hardeeville, South Carolina on August 24, 1923 to William L. and Mell Prescott Hughes.  Prescott was a faithful member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church and proclaimed Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.  He served in the Army during WWII in the Battle of the Bulge.  He built bridges with the 158th Combat Engineer's and was an active member of their Army reunions.  Upon his discharge from the service,

Prescott worked for Southern Bell, retiring after thirty years of service. Prescott was an avid fisherman and Gator fan, and loved working with wood.  He took pleasure in making wooden frames, furniture and wooden collectibles for family and friends.  He attended Port Orange School and Mainland High School.  He was preceded in death by his siblings, Robert, Jewel and Helen.  Prescott is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Ruth; a brother, Harold Hughes and his wife, Betz and sister-in-law, Angie Hughes.  He was a loving father to sons, William Lee Hughes and wife, Kathy; and Alan Prescott Hughes and wife, Claudia.

Prescott adored his three grandsons, Joel, Jared and Billy and his two granddaughters,

April and Jenny, as well as three great grandchildren.  A public viewing will be held Monday, February 8, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Haigh-Black Funeral Home, located at 167 Vining Court, Ormond Beach.  Funeral services will be held at the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, 1250 Beville Road, on Tuesday, February 9th at 1:00 p.m.  Memorial Contributions:  Samaritan's Purse P.O. Dear Ruth and Family, we were so saddened to learn of Prescott's death and how suddenly it came. The Prescott Reunions will not be the same without him. I am sure he is having the best reunion ever where he is now. Although we will be unable to come to the funeral, please know our thoughts and prayers are with each of you.
