Sophie W. Fleet, wife of the late Seward Fleet, joined her husband on June 7, 2010. Born in Poland on September 1, 1910 Sophie immigrated to the United States with her parents and five siblings in 1914. After passing through Ellis Island, Sophie and her family settled in Savannah, Georgia where she was raised and educated. Subsequent to their marriage in 1929, Sophie and Seward ultimately settled in Live Oak, Florida where they raised their two children. During their years in Live Oak she was co-owner Seward Fleet Department Store. The many charitable and religious organizations in which Sophie was involved included service as Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Board of Directors of the Sisterhood of Temple Israel in Daytona Beach and Life Member of Hadassah.
Preceded in death by her grandson, Mitchell Fleet she is survived by her daughter Bette Ann Leider; her son Leonard Fleet; eight grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Included in the extended family which survives Sophie are her devoted and loving caretakers, Sharon, Janet, Florence, Marie and Lourdes.
A graveside service will be held today (Wednesday) at 10:00 a.m. at Mount Sinai Cemetery in Daytona Beach.
Memorial donations may be made to either Temple Israel in Daytona Beach, Temple Israel in Winter Springs, FL or Hospice of the Comforter in Altamonte Springs.
